About the Book

A Pot to Piss In is a memoir by Sagashus Levingston that defies convention. It tells the story of a Black mother of six who dared to chase a life of legacy, wealth, and freedom—even when she was told she didn’t have a “pot to piss in.”

This is a story about ambition, identity, motherhood, sex, money, housing, trauma—and transformation. It’s rooted in personal experience, but it’s a mirror for a society that often overlooks the women doing the most and judged the hardest.

A Pot to Piss In invites deep, interdisciplinary dialogue—on race, gender, class, policy, and power.

For professors, this book isn’t just a reading—it’s a movement.

This Founding Circle: Professors Edition Is About....

This is a pre-order campaign—but it’s about more than book sales. It’s about shaping the movement before it becomes mainstream.

When educators and institutions like yours choose to include A Pot to Pss In*—in syllabi, first-year experiences, reading groups, or professional development—it becomes more than a book.

It becomes a catalyst for critical inquiry, a bridge between lived experience and academic frameworks, and a mirror that reflects the complexity of identity, power, and survival. It offers students strategy and storytelling, representation and rigor—and gives educators new language and depth to explore some of today’s most urgent questions.

This isn’t just course content. It’s cultural conversation. It’s scholarship in motion.

The professors who teach it first won’t just be early adopters. They’ll be shaping how this story—and the ideas inside it—are studied, shared, and remembered.

About the Author

I’m Dr. Sagashus Levingston—a mother of six, a PhD, and a woman who had to figure it out while everything felt like it was falling apart.

When I created A Pot to P*ss In, I imagined it on syllabi across the country. In grad school, I’d read too many books that framed mothers outside of “respectability” as cautionary tales, charity cases, or the cause of poverty. I wanted to offer something different.

That vision began with my dissertation, grew into Infamous Mothers, extended through the blog, and now lives in this book. A Pot to P*ss In was created to be part of the literary, critical, and theoretical ecosystem—one that challenges assumptions, reflects real lives, and reshapes how we define power, resilience, and leadership in the classroom.
