Raven Davenport
The Space Maker

“I got seven things on this list. How am I not one of them?”
At a glance
Home: Chicago
Work: Upholstery and home-goods studio
Family: Mother of Imani, June, and Ellis with her partner, Micah
Gift: Creating physical space where there was none
Limit: More space does not create more time, energy, money, or help
Current question: How do I make room for rest when people depend on me?
Meet Raven
Raven knows what a room could become. She notices the chair that needs a different fabric, the walkway that is too narrow, the person who needs somewhere to sit. Put her palm against a wall and the room can open wider.
She takes pride in that gift. She takes pride in her work, too. Beautiful fabric, a finished order, the details that make somebody feel considered before they arrive: Raven sees the possibilities and wants to make them real.
Then she looks at her own day. The studio has grown. The list has grown with it. Her body has not acquired six extra hours.
Her gift and what it asks of her
Raven can expand physical space. She cannot make Tuesday longer, finish an order by wishing, or turn an empty corner into another adult who can watch the children.
Her trouble begins when making room becomes a reason to take on more. A new possibility can become a new promise before she has asked what it will require of her. She is learning to look at the cost without losing the part of herself that sees what could be.
Love and family
Raven and Micah have known each other since grammar school. Their friendship continued over the years and developed into a romantic relationship. He is the father of their three children.
Micah is currently incarcerated for drug dealing, and going in and out of jail for drug dealing is a recurring part of his history. Raven loves a man who listens closely and gives her emotional support. She also lives with the practical limits of his absence.
After a good conversation, the children still need care. The work still needs doing. He cannot come over and take June to the park. Their love holds tenderness, longing, frustration, and responsibilities that a phone call cannot divide.
Celia, Raven’s cousin, provides the agreed, paid childcare in Raven’s first story. Support has a person, a cost, and an arrangement behind it.
What she wants
Raven wants her life to have room for her, too. Music and dancing. Time with friends. Rest she does not have to defend by proving how much she finished first.
Money matters. She has work to do and financial goals to meet. Her question is how to build a life that can hold those ambitions without using every available piece of her.
Where her story begins
An order is finished early. Childcare is arranged and paid for. Raven starts filling the opening with seven more tasks. During a call with Micah, she notices she has not put herself on her own list.
Her coaching question becomes the reader’s question: “I have so much to get done and not enough of me to get it done. And I still need rest.”
The story follows a practical choice about work, support, and rest. Raven does not emerge with a perfect life. She begins a practice she will need again.
